TOEIC | 예문을 통한 단어 정리 - hold someone accountable, engage

1. ENGAGE

Salespersons are customarily engaged away from the employer's place 

of business in performing their primary duty of selling novelty items.

engage : 고용하다

engage in sth : sth에 관여하다, sth 하느라 바쁘다. sth에 종사하다.

novelty : 진기한, 색다른

primary duty : 주요 직무

미드의 영향으로 engage가 약혼에 대한 의미라고만 알고 있었는데 이런 뜻도 있었구나 했다. 

느낌은 비슷해서 흐름상 비슷하게 해석하긴 했지만 확실히 알고 넘어가는 것이 좋겠다.

미드 FRIENDS에서 모니카가  I'm engaged! I'm engaged! 라고 소리치는 걸 I'm gay! I'm gay!로 들었다던 로스 생각나ㅋㅋ

2. HOLD SOMEONE ACCOUNT

be held accountable : 책임을 지다

blatantly : 뻔뻔스럽게, 주제넘게

misrepresent : 잘못 전하다

account 부터 시작해보자.

account 끊임없이 등장하지만 개인적으로 뜻이 와닿지 않는 단어이다.

내 머릿 속엔 Bank account로써의 존재감이 너무 커서 다른 뜻이 안 잘 안 외워진다.

account : n. 계좌, 단골, 고객, 이용 계정, 설명

             v. 간주하다, 여기다 

account for : -를 설명하다, (비율)을 차지하다, 책임을 지다

이렇게 잘 안 외워지는 단어는 영영사전을 참고하면 좋다!

왜냐하면 잘 외워지지 않는 단어는 내가 그 단어를 해석한 한국어를 잘 사용하지 않기 때문이라고 생각한다.

평소에 말하면서 '간주하다', '여기다' 라는 말을 자주 사용하지 않기 때문에 account가 머릿 속에 잘 들어오지 않는다.

반면에 bank account 같은 경우는 한번 듣고 여태껏 잊어버린 적이 없다. '은행 계좌'는 내가 자주 쓰는 말이라서 그렇다.

account : consider or regard in a specified way

Her visit could not be accounted a success.

account for : 1. supply or make up a specified amount or proportion of.

                 2. provide or serve as a satisfactory explanation or reason for.

                 3. if someone has to account for an action or policy, they are responsible for it, and may be required to explain it 

                    to other people or be punished if it fails.

1. Computers account for 5% of the country's commercial electricity consumption.

2. Now, the gene they discovered today doesn't account for all those cases.

3. The President must account for his government's reforms.

앞으로 account는 consider, regard라고 외워야겠다!
